Understanding Studies in Catalyst

A study in Athinia Catalyst is a workspace where you can analyze datasets, create visualizations, and apply machine learning techniques to uncover patterns and insights. Each study contains a dataset and various analysis tools that help you understand your data better.

Creating a New Study

To get started with Catalyst, you'll need to create a study. Open https://catalyst.athinia.io in your browser and sign in. From the main Studies dashboard, you'll see a "Create Study" button in the upper right corner. If you don't have any studies yet, you'll also see a "Create Study" button in the center of the screen.

Step 1: Name and Description

The first step in creating a study is to provide a name and optional description. The study name is required and should be descriptive enough to help you identify the study later. The description field allows you to provide more detailed information about the purpose of the study, the nature of the data, or any specific goals you want to achieve.

Step 2: Choose a Dataset Source

After naming your study, you'll need to specify a dataset to work with. Catalyst offers two options for adding data to your study:

Select an Existing Dataset

If you or your organization has previously uploaded datasets to Catalyst, you can select one from your available resources. This option allows you to:

  • Choose from datasets you've previously uploaded
  • Select datasets from collaboration projects you're part of
  • Search for specific datasets using the resource ID or name

This option is ideal if you're working with data that's already in the system or if you're collaborating with others on shared datasets.

Upload a New Dataset

If you have a new dataset that you want to analyze, you can upload it directly from your computer. When uploading a dataset:

  • Files are uploaded directly from your browser
  • Your data is stored securely in your private namespace
  • Only users in your organization will be able to see the dataset
  • You can share the dataset with other organizations through the Use Case Portal if needed

Catalyst supports several file formats including CSV, TSV, NDJSON, and Excel files. These can be compressed as gzip, bzip2, or xz if necessary. You can upload multiple files, and the system will infer the schema from the first file.

To upload, simply drag and drop your files into the designated area or click to browse your files. Once uploaded, you'll see a list of the files with their names and sizes.

Step 3: Review Summary

In the final step, you'll see a summary of your study configuration, including the study name and the selected or uploaded dataset. This gives you a chance to review your choices before creating the study.

Draft Mode

When you create a new study, it will be created in draft mode. This means that only you will have access to it initially. Draft mode gives you the opportunity to set up your analysis, explore the data, and refine your insights before sharing with others.

When you're ready to share your study with colleagues or collaborators, you can use the "Publish" button in the study view. This will make the study accessible to others according to your organization's permission settings.

Working with Your Study

After creating your study, you'll be taken to the study interface where you can begin your analysis. Catalyst provides several tools to help you explore and analyze your data:

Making the Most of Catalyst

As you become more familiar with Catalyst, you'll discover many more features to help you gain deeper insights from your data. The platform is designed to be intuitive while providing powerful analytical capabilities that can help you make data-driven decisions.

Remember that you can always create additional studies to analyze different datasets or explore the same data from different angles. Catalyst makes it easy to organize your work and collaborate with others in your organization.
